To overcome this problem a new square-shaped wear-resistant rifling system was introduced. The first Lee Enfield rifles fused the bolt-action of the Lee-Metford with the Enfield barrel. The rifle was also known as the Magazine Lee-Enfield and the “Long Lee” because of the length of the barrel.
